A step-by-step guide to creating the Jack Frost Look

“We wanted to give Jack Frost the feel of the season of winter and to achieve this we created a cool, pearlescent sheen to his face. We accomplished this by using a mixture of frosty white and icy blue make-up. To complete the look, I would suggest your character dress in a costume that reflects the Jack Frost theme, such as a pale blue or a white suit, perhaps in a material that softly shimmers. Make-up can become very messy when applied to the hands, so it’s much simpler to recommend your Jack Frost wear a pair of white gloves to keep the icy white theming consistent.” BARRY KOPER
YOU WILL NEED THE FOLLOWING ITEMS…
1) Clown white foundation make-up (this cream is readily available in local theatrical stores or fancy dress shops – theatrical make-up is preferred)
2) Sky blue theatrical make-up (again, a cream from a theatrical store will work best)
3) Baby powder
4) Shiny pearl white or frosty white pearlescent powder (available in all major beauty suppliers, make-up stores or theatrical stores)
5) Icy blue pearlescent make-up powder (again, available from all major beauty suppliers, make-up stores or theatrical stores)
6) A selection of loose pearlescent glitters in frosty white and icy blue (these are available in make-up stores, but double check they are safe for use on the skin)
7) Strong hair gel
8) A can of white, spray-on hair colouring (temporary colouring, not permanent!)
9) A flat quarter-inch make-up brush or a synthetic make-up sponge
10) A powder brush (or a rouge brush)
11) A powder puff
12) A Q-tip
STEP ONE
The first and most important step to creating the look of Jack Frost is to have clean skin. Wash and cleanse your face to remove oil and dirt, which may be clogged in the pores of the skin. This ensures a clean palette to work on.
STEP TWO
Apply a thin layer of clown white make-up foundation to the skin to give it a pale white sheen. Don’t go too heavy on the foundation – just a thin layer to create a feeling of frost. Make sure the foundation also covers the lips.
STEP THREE
Take a flat quarter-inch make-up brush – or a synthetic make-up sponge – and lightly contour the hollows of the cheeks, the sides of the nose and around the eyes with sky blue theatrical make-up cream to give an icy feel to the skin. This also adds a subtle gaunt feel to the face.
STEP FOUR
Add a tiny amount of the sky blue theatrical make-up cream to the lips to give them a bitter cold appearance.
STEP FIVE
Dip a powder puff in some of the baby powder and apply this over the make-up to set the look. Try to use a baby powder with a light metallic sheen to it. This will accentuate the icy effect.
STEP SIX
Take a clean powder brush (or rouge brush) and brush off the excess baby powder. You now have a make-up base which shouldn’t smear.
STEP SEVEN
Dip a powder brush (or rouge brush) in the icy white pearlescent make-up powder and apply over the top of the baby powder to give the face a more frosty shine.
STEP EIGHT
Dip a powder brush (or rouge brush) in the icy blue pearlescent powder and apply over the top of the baby powder around the hollows of the cheeks, the sides of the nose and around the eyes.
STEP NINE
Take a small amount of the clown white make-up foundation cream (used in STEP TWO) and paint a little in the eyebrows to lighten them and enhance their frosty feel.
STEP TEN
Add a little of the white or blue pearlescent powder over the top of the cream on the eyebrows to add a little sheen to this area.
STEP ELEVEN
Dampen a Q-tip with a little water and dip it into the pearlescent glitters. Add to the eyebrows to make them sparkle and add a touch of frost.
STEP TWELVE
If you want to take the sparkly look a step further, use a dampened Q-tip to add a little of the pearlescent glitter above the eye, where eye shadow is usually applied.
STEP THIRTEEN
Lightly dampen your Jack Frost’s hair and spike it up into little punky points using the hair gel.
STEP FOURTEEN
Spray the tips of the hair white using the can of temporary hair colour. If desired, you could also go for an all-over white hair colour.
STEP FIFTEEN
Immediately after spraying the tips – while the white colouring is still wet – sprinkle a little glitter on to the hair to give a glittery fantasy effect.
And voila – your Jack Frost look is complete!
